Aww-neen, OSS. Next week is the National Day for Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, also known as Red Dress Day. You might have heard of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s residential school research, which included 94 calls to action; you might not know that the government’s National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls made 231 calls to action or recommendations. The National Inquiry reported that the violence against Indigenous women and girls is due to race-based genocidal policies and practices, and further found that Two-Spirited individuals, or Indigenous people part of the LGBTQ+ community, are also highly at risk due to forced stereotypical views of gender. The National Inquiry recommended that women and Two-Spirited individuals must be empowered through cultural opportunities and healing initiatives. It also recommended changing laws, policies and practices that discriminate against them, among many other calls to action. While the report made these recommendations in 2019, little action has actually been taken. We can help raise awareness and take action on this topic by coming together next week for a presentation in the Library with Elders, community members and fellow students. Meeg-wetch.
